Choosing a Charity

Giving can do so much good. The more time you take to decide on your charity of choice the more good you will do. The following list of do’s and don’ts will surely make your charitable dollars go farther.

  1. Do not give impulsively. Spend 10 or 15 minutes doing research on the charity before giving.
    1. Does the charity have a Facebook page?
    2. Visit the organization’s website. If there is no site, it should raise questions.
    3. Is the organization transparent about their finances?
    4. Determine how much of your donation goes directly to the charity’s intended use and how much goes to overheard.
  2. Is it better to give all my gifts to one place or should I spread my giving?
    1. Experts recommend that you give more money to fewer organizations.
    2. If a certain social issue is important to you, such as education, preventative medicine or economic empowerment for women and children, then donating $500 to one charity makes more of an impact than $100 to five different ones.
    3. You will do more good by putting all your eggs in one basket and sticking with it for at least 3 years.
    4. It costs a lot for charities to recruit new donors. If you are loyal it saves your charity of choice money.
  3. How much is too little?
    1. Simply put: No Donation is too Small.
  4. What if you can’t give money?
    1. Be a cheerleader; Post on social media.
    2. The biggest reason people give is because friends and families ask them to.
