Creativity in the Classroom– How Art in School Improves Academic Outcomes

For as long as there have been people, there has been art. From cave paintings that date back tens of thousands of years to the modern sculptures in galleries around the world, artistic expression is all around us. People have a powerful emotional connection to artwork and it continues to be an incredibly important aspect of our society that transcends culture and borders. While many people think of art in the context of recreation and entertainment, it’s important to consider the place of art in school.

Art in school

Numerous studies over several decades highlight the importance of including creative expression and art in school curriculum. The University of California Los Angeles conducted a study of data from over 25,000 students across the country. Researchers found a strong correlation between involvement in the arts and academic performance. Students who had higher involvement in art classes and activities performed better on standardized tests and assessments. What’s more, these students also spent more time performing community service and reported less boredom at school.

Art in school doesn’t just help students develop their creativity and imagination, it also promotes memory and attention. These are skills that students can apply to every area of academic study. Among students in low-income areas, those who participate in art programs are far more likely to be high academic achievers than those who aren’t. In many cases involvement in the arts gives students the boost they need to overcome their academic challenges.

Casa Chapi’s philosophy

When we established Casa Chapi in 2010, we knew that we wanted to provide students with quality education. To do this, we focused on more than just our academic curriculum. By introducing art in the classroom, we are setting our students up for long-term success. Time and time again, Casa Chapi students have excelled and demonstrated outstanding academic performance. With the help of our donors, we will continue providing Casa Chapi students with quality instruction and expand our reach to include more students in the region.
